Welcome to our lives.
We were shielded ever since we were babies. Most of our parents tried to protect us from everything going on in the world. That's why they chose to raise us where we still live today. The suburbs of New Jersey. Nothing ever goes wrong here. At least, that's what they told us.
Every once in a while, when we were all in elementary school, police officers would come and talk to us about drugs and alcohol. We all thought of it as foreign. Nothing like that could ever happen in our safe little towns. We had sex ed. They taught us to always be careful. We thought of sex as foreign as well. Nobody here knew anything about it. We didn't think we'd be doing anything along those lines for a while.
Until we got to high school. High school opened our eyes. We learned that even tiny suburbs have big problems. There are actually three main high schools parents choose to send their kids to. You've got your expensive, preppy, all-girl's Catholic school. You've got their brother school, the expensive all-boy's school. Then you've got the public school. The one for everyone who can't afford the other schools, or who can't pass the test. The test you take to get into those schools, that is. A hard test. Also, they only accept certain people. It's all a big scam, really. They only accept the smartest, the prettiest, the richest. It basically goes down like this:
As an 8th grader, you come to visit Angelfield, the all-girl's school, just to see what it's like. They put on their happy faces and pretend that you're like every other girl there. They pretend to be your friend. They pretend that you'll fit in perfectly. They pretend that you're good enough.
As an 8th grader, you come to visit Rockwell, the all-boy's school, just to see what it's like. They put on their happy faces and pretend that you're like every other guy there. They pretend to be your friend. They pretend that you'll fit in perfectly. They pretend that you're good enough.
As an 8th grader, you come to visit Westvale High, the co-ed public school, just to see what it's like. They put on their happy faces and pretend that you're like everyone else there. They pretend to be your friend. They pretend that you'll fit in perfectly. They pretend that you're good enough.
So, which one will you choose? Are you smart enough? Rich enough? Brave enough?
